Often, the most visible sign of thyroid problems is a swelling in the neck called goiter. Goiter is due to enlargement of the thyroid gland. It may be present in individuals suffering from either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. It is noteworthy that both cancerous and noncancerous nodules can lead to enlargement of the thyroid gland. Therefore, a swelling in the neck should not go unchecked; if this sign appears, it is recommended that a doctor is consulted.
