In premenopausal women, having thyroid issues usually impacts their menstrual cycle. It is typical for physicians to monitor menstrual activity to confirm suspicions of thyroid problems. Women suffering from hypothyroidism are likely to experience bleeding for longer than usual. Those having hyperthyroidism may notice a reduced flow that does not last as long as before. However, though rather standard, changes in menstruation may not necessarily occur in all women with thyroid issues. Also, there are other medical conditions besides thyroid dysfunction that can lead to menstrual changes.
